ANAT 1999 National Summer School in Science and Art
Program Overview
Week One:
General overview of work being done in this area. The first week will include introductions to web authoring, sound development, visualisation packages etc. It will also include several intensive artist talks, where artists will expand on ideas they have been working on, with a particular focus on projects dealing with science and art.
I would also like to suggest that participants be prepared to do short 20 minute presentations of their own work, particularly during the first week or so of the school in order that participants can share skills and expertise with one another and learn from one another. As you will know, the ANAT National Summer School operates in a masterclass learning environment, and as such there is an expectation that the more participants contribute, the more valuable the learning experience!
Week Two:
Follow up sessions from the introductory areas outlined in week one which will include more advanced workshops in some areas. Several artists presentations and workshops will take place at Vislab at Australian Technology Park and the University of Sydney where participants will have access to SGI machines and scientific visualisation packages.
Week Three:
Workshops in VRML, Lingo, Director and control mechanisms to hardware, follow up sessions from weeks one and two, and time to focus on the development of works in progress.
An open day will be held during this week on Wednesday 27 or Thursday 28 in the late afternoon/ early evening. The open day will take the form of a public forum. Artists have been invited to give presentations at this public presentation. Participants of the school will also be expected to have prepared some work in progress (this will be discussed early on in the school, and may include individual and/ or jointly developed material), which will be on display during the open day.
Other notes:
Metro is providing 24 hour, 7 day a week access to their facilities to us for the duration of the school. You are all encouraged to use this privilege as much as you require during the school.
Those attending from interstate are being accommodated at the University of NSW, Kensington Campus, as previously advised. As the cooking facilities there are less than desirable (there are microwave ovens, fridges, water urns etc, but it is rather primitive I am afraid!) I am, therefore, arranging for adequate cooking facilities to be available in the Metro kitchens for you to be able to do some food preparation there. So I would envisage that lunches would happen at Metro, and that if people want to, dinner can also be prepared here too. You are, as you know, responsible for the cost of this yourselves. As the accommodation is a little further away than has been the case in the past, people may want to stay in Paddington after dinner to be able to get access to the labs after hours (out of "class time" to further develop work and or ideas discussed during the days).
