ANAT is now calling for applications from artists across Australia for the Tenth National Summer School which will be held in January 1999. The School will be held over three weeks in January 1999 in partnership with Metro Screen in Sydney, NSW, with additional support from the College of Fine Arts, UNSW.

NATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL 1999 - WHAT IS IT?
ANAT has pioneered intensive skilling programs for artists through itscoordination of annual National Summer Schools in computer media since 1989. The overriding aim of the Summer Schools is to provide practicing professional artists from any media background with an immersive and catalytic context for the acquisition of relevant computer skills and the generation of ideas.

SCIENCE AND ART
During 1998, ANAT's focus has been on the interaction between art and science. This focus, scientific serendipity, has provided the framework under which a number of our key programs have been operating during the year, including the development of projects and commissions which directly engage with science, scientific visualisation techniques and technologies. To culminate this focus the 1999 National Summer School will be focussed on diverse science and technology practices and how science and art can collaborate. The school will investigate the discrete discourses surrounding sciences and media arts and will encourage the generation of unexpected and alchemic outcomes. Metro Screen will provide technical facilities and support, and the critical context of a research and production site.

MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGIES
The 1999 school will also include focii on other screen based technologies such as internet and multimedia authoring packages, to skill participants at the highest possible level in the creative uses of contemporary new media tools. Participants will be expected to have some background in digital media and/or sound production. 24 hour / 7 days a week access to computer facilities will optimise the participants' ability to explore and exploit the technologies being taught.

TUTORS
Tutors for National Summer Schools are established artists' themselves and bring to the schools not only a thorough working knowledge of various programs and processes, but also a profound understanding of how artists will push technology to new places to achieve creative ideas. The artist tutors for this year's school will have a strong background in science discourses, multimedia authoring, conceptual design and cultural critique.

FEES
Fees for the school are kept relatively low, with the hosts - Metro Screen - acting as a co-sponsor of the Summer School. Subsidy funding is sought from government arts departments to enable the broadest range of participation possible. The registration fee, and subsidy assistance to cover travel and accommodation for participants, will be confirmed in December when ANAT receives the results of funding applications. (As a guide, fees for 1998 were $450.)
